Case Study and Preparing for RootsTech 2023

We are changing our name to "Genealogy Club - Seabrook-Kiawah Island", the DIRT has been a  wonderful and cute title, however you always have to explain we are a Genealogy Club.

We had a good hybrid session with several on the zoom and many in the room.

Glenn Soden's case study on: Circumstantial Proof was wonderful.  Thank you, Glenn.

RootsTech 2023 is on March 2,3 and 4, 2023 - free virtual Genealogy Conference (largest in the world).  Our presentation on Getting the Most out of RootsTech 2023 was well received and a link to the replay video is here: Click Here

 Kickoff 2023

We had a good turn out for our Kickoff 2023 DIRT meeting.  We talked about individual goals from 2022 and those set for 2023.  Goals help you to stop and focus on what you want to get done.  Please stop and determine what your goals are for 2023.

I showed some of the upcoming events (not all, just some of those coming up).  Click here.  The link to the YouTube channel for free BYU webinars is here: Click here

I presented an Example Project Approach for someone who is begining to organize their research and wants to get a tree going (knowing full well that the sources and proof need to be done to prove out each family member at a later date).  I don;t know if this is useful, but here it is: Click here.

We discussed some future topics for our upcoming meetings in 2023 (if you want a specific topic, please send me the request):

  • Breaking Down Brickwalls
  • Church Records
  • DNA use for genealogy
  • Finding Impossible immigrants
  • Organizing Genealogy materials
  • Land Records
  • Lost Carolinas
  • Migration patterns in America
  • Military Records
  • PERSI
  • Using Photo enhancement on gravestones

We will also start having select DIRT members give a case study on their work (not only telling the success story of what they found, also including what resources or steps they took to find that answer.

We discussed how to bring in new members and decided to use Tidelines more for advertising and showing what we do.  Also, investigate how to get our meetings on the Kiawah list and use there eblast as well.

There will also be several group projects on selected states within the USA with you all working together.

Remember to bring your questions, your stories, your computer and your eagerness to do genealogy.

See you at the next meeting!

 Happy Holidays

We had a great meeting with cookies brought by members and a discussion of what people had found in their family history research.

There was a short demonstration of how to use Family Tree Maker when doing on-line research, bringing in text, dates, places easily into FTM and merging with a person.  See video (go to 55 min mark) Click here

We had a lively brainstorming session focused on what we can do differently in 2023 to make our meetings more interesting and how to make it inviting for new members.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 25, 2023.  Before this meeting, I would like to ask you to

  1. Review our DIRT Blog and look for areas we have covered in the past that you would like repeated and recorded for the future (presentations before March 2020 were not video recorded.  Send your suggestions to me by January 15, 2023.  For list click here
  2. Think about what you accomplished in your genealogy journey in 2022 and what goals you want to set for 2023 (bring your new goals to share at the January 25th meeting).  To see presentation on goal setting click here
  3. I will send out a questionnaire to current membership, asking what they would like to see for DIRT that would make it interesting for them.

Have a wonderful and joyous Holiday Season.
