Charleston County Public Library
Please note:  If you are just beginning to search your family history, and not sure if you want to invest in a subscription to a site such as Ancestry.com, you can test it out and get your feet wet at the John Island Branch.  The library has an international subscription to Ancestry.com and has three or four computers with the ability to access the site.  Check with the research librarian and he or she can sign you on to a computer and you are then free to search and experiment.  There do not appear to be constraints as to how long you are allowed to work - and the library staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Charleston Chapter South Carolina Genealogy Society
Meets once a month

Ancestry.com
http://www.ancestry.com/
Most family researchers have, once had, will re-register to have again, a paid subscription to this site.  It is often touted as the quintessential genealogy site.  But if you don't need access to international records, you might find the free resources suit you just fine!

Family Search
https://familysearch.org/
This is a totally free resource - and a great place to start.  You will need to establish an account (email address and password) and once that is done, you will have access to the vast resources the LDS church makes available.

WorldCat http://www.worldcat.org/.  World's largest library catalog.
